So you or your class want to post some thoughts, opinions, projects or reviews online. What steps are involved in getting this out to the public? Well, you could register a domain name, pay for server space, install a blogging platform, set up the site and begin to post. Or, if you want to speed that up, you could register with services such as WordPress, Tumblr or Jux. But all this registration and installation sounds like a lot of effort for just a single post… That is where Pen.io comes in. Officially the fastest way to get your content online.
Recently launched, Pen.io was created by a small team in San Francisco as a side project with the aim of creating “the fastest way to put a piece of content online“. Although extremely basic, the beauty of Pen.io lies in its simplicity and the lack of bells, whistles and distractions means that content is the focus. It is the perfect platform for students who want to publish and share their work online without having to sign up email and personal details.
On visiting Pen.io all a user is presented with is two fields; Page Name and Password. No email and no personal details are needed to create a site.
This is very unusual in the Internet universe and is great for schools, parents and students that are not comfortable putting their details online.
Embed Images and Video
Pages created with Pen.io are simple text with a white background and very little distraction. This does not mean that pages need to be media lacking as it is simple and fast to embed links, images and video.
Pen.io lets users embed media using “PenUp Tags” and HTML. This way more advanced users can create more advanced pages with HTML, while novice users can use “PenUp Tags” to embed basic media.
PenUp is a simple markup language specific to Pen.io. So for example, to embed a YouTube video, you can use the “PenUp Tag” :video followed by the YouTube URL. The current tag collection includes:
- Create a New Page – :page
- Add A YouTube Video – :video http://youtube.com/urlofvideo
- Headings – :h3 Heading Goes Here
- Links – :link The Link Text Goes Here http://thelinkurlgoeshere
- Images – :image http://urlofimagegoeshere/image.jpg” (images can also be drag-n-dropped into the page)
Share and Collaborate
Sharing a Pen.io page is as simple as sharing the URL. So for example, we created a page in just under three minutes at: http://fractus.pen.io
A little more time spent and quite nice pages can be created and shared: http://buzzpictures.pen.io/
This URL is completely public so it is important you are happy to share everything in the post. If you wish to let a friend or colleague edit your page, all they need is the password you assigned when creating the page.
All in all, Pen.io is a great alternative to bloated blogging platforms and well worth a try. Sure, if you don’t like it you will have only wasted three minutes of your time anyway.
Do you know a faster way to get content online? How would you use Pen.io with your class?
