7 Rockin’ Baby Swing Ideas

Ah, yes the baby swing! A must-have on the baby shower registry list for new parents. It’s a fact, no matter how good your intentions, you cannot have baby swaddled around you or ‘kangaroo-pouching’ all day. The reality is life goes on, and no matter how much this little being has rocked your world, you’re going to need something to rock him or her when you can’t.

There are several types of swings available; the full size, the portable and the hybrid. Some parents opt for the full size and portable, especially if they do a lot of visiting or traveling. The portable swings are also great to leave at grandparents’ or family members you visit often.

Then there’s the hybrid. As the name suggests, it’s a combination of a swing, bouncer and glider. These are a popular choice because of all the features and their versatility but they can be quite costly and aren’t necessarily ideal as a portable or traveling swing because of its weight. Let’s take a look at some of the best!

1. Fisher-Price Newborn Rock ‘n Play Sleeper

Fisher-Price Newborn Rock 'n Play Sleeper

My children have passed the stage of vibrating swings and soothing chairs, but if I had known about the Rock ‘n Play sleeper I would have, without a doubt, used it. It’s received over 1000 five-star reviews and you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know it’s very well priced. It has a vibration setting to help calm baby but you can also rock it with a gentle push. The incline helps colicky babies sleep (oh how I needed this) and it folds up for moving around or storing. And it’s machine washable and dryer safe.

Suitable for newborn to 6 months

2. Graco DreamGlider Gliding Seat & Sleeper

Baby Swing

Whoever thought of this is a genius! It is a 3-position reclining baby swing seat and a comfy sleeper, so once baby’s fallen asleep you don’t have to worry about moving him or her to a bassinet or a cot. The DreamGlider‘s plush support and gentle motion simulates being in mom or dad’s arms. There are six gliding speeds and a 2-speed vibration setting which you can adjust, depending on your baby’s mood.

Suitable for newborn to 6 months

3. Swaddle Swing

Baby Swing

The Swaddle Swing is proof that technology doesn’t necessarily improve your life or make it easier. This baby swing is ”parent-powered’, meaning you never have to worry about batteries running low or breaking parts. Described as ‘an off switch for your crying baby’, it’s already won a Mom’s Choice Award because of its clever design. Born out of desperation, by new parents with a colicky baby, it combines a swaddle blanket and a swing, and can (apparently) settle a fussy baby in seconds. It folds up easily, can fit in your diaper bag and doubles up as a changing pad.

Suitable for newborn to 6 months (but can be used for longer depending on size and weight of your baby).

4. Fisher-Price Deluxe Take Along Swing and Seat

Baby Swing

It’s not surprising there are two Fisher-Price products mentioned here. The company has been around forever and is a trusted name when it comes to all things ‘baby’. The Deluxe Take-Along Swing & Seat is a six-speed baby swing with music and comforting nature sounds as well as a seat with calming vibrations. Whichever mode you choose, baby’s comfortable, happy and safe, with two little birdie friends overhead for entertainment.  The swing-seat combo features SmartSwing Technology, which means it senses the baby’s weight and automatically adjusts so the speeds won’t slow as your little one grows. It’s perfect for travel as it folds up flat if you need to take it to gran’s house or on holiday.

Suitable for newborns and babies up to 25 pounds.

5. BABYBJORN Bouncer Balance Soft

I am that mom who likes to know a product has been developed with, or endorsed by a specialist. It immediately puts my mind at ease. The ergonomically designed BABYBJORN is suitable for baby from day one, and can also be used as a chair up until two years old.  Developed together with world-leading pediatricians, it gives a newborn baby the proper head, neck and back support and has four positions including play, rest, sleep and transport mode. It’s baby-powered, meaning your baby rocks it, strengthening and developing motor skills and balance in a natural way.

6. Sassy Cuddle Bug BouncerBaby Swing

Even though it’s not really a baby swing, I’ve included the cuddle bug bouncer because who doesn’t want to be hugged by a butterfly or bumble bee? Everything about this screams cozy and comfortable, from the oversized cradling seat to the built in cuddle blanket.  The blanket’s built-in ‘wings’ allow baby to feel secure and comfortable while safely strapped in. It includes three vibration settings and 10 lullabies, with volume control.

Suitable for newborn and toddlers up to 25 pounds

7. Little Tikes Cozy Coupe First Swing

Baby Swing

This cute little swing, also available in red, is perfect for little ones that are able to support themselves. It’s comfortable, safe and the steering wheel has a horn, which seems to up the fun-o-meter by about 1000%. It’s easy to assemble and fits onto existing swing sets.

Suitable for babies from 9 months to 3 years old

There are so many baby swing options to choose from, and as is the case with all things baby-related, you will get inundated with advice and recommendations from everyone, including Aunty Ethel who lives down the road and the friend of a mom of a sister of an aunt whose child goes to the same school as her brother’s friend’s kid. But at the end of the day it’s a personal choice that needs to suit you and your budget.
